Munitions Destroyed Safely on Waipio Peninsula

Munitions dredged from Pearl Harbor are being destroyed today and possibly tomorrow.  The Naval Facilities Engineering Command hired contractor Cape Environmental Management, Inc., to destroy the munitions using controlled detonations at a safe location on the Waipio Peninsula.  You might hear the explosions, but Navy officials say the public won't be at risk at any time.  The Navy says some munitions are believed to still be in the harbor from the 1941 Japanese bombing and the explosion of a landing ship in West Lock in 1944.
