State Turns to the Dogs to Eliminate Little Fire Ant

State invasive species officials are looking at using Australian dogs trained to sniff out little fire ants to help curb the invasion of the species on Oahu and other islands. Plans are in the works to bring the trained dogs and their handlers to Hawaii in April to conduct an assessment of Maui, Oahu and the Big Island, where the pests have been found. The dogs might be cross-trained to also detect the presence of coqui frogs, another invasive species threatening the native environment.
