Police have charged a 16-year-old Palolo boy arrested in connection with the beating death of a 62-year-old homeless man Friday morning in McCully. Police say the boy, whose name is not being released because he's a minor, has been charged with second-degree murder. But police documents indicate a petition has been filed to reduce the charge to a less-serious manslaughter charge. The victim was 62-year-old Anthony Montero, who described himself as a freelance journalist. He also ran unsuccessfully for several political offices under the name Paul A. Manner. Authorities say Montero was beaten by a group of teens, where he was sleeping. A police spokeswoman says no other suspects are being sought in the case.
